https://www.npr.org/2023/07/09/1186525577/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-2023 I'm so excited to see them for the first time! Have you ever seen the aurora borealis

Unfortunately, the KP index has dropped and with it being less than 5, it’s very unlikely we’ll see it where I’m at. It needs to be 6 or above for us to even see it on the northern horizon, if you get to high altitude and away from light pollution (which is hard for me to do without a car). If you look at the latest forecast and map, the Aurora has moved back up north and we are less likely to see it in the states in general. If the forecast increases, I’ll definitely plan to hitch a ride somewhere to try and see it. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled on the forecast tomorrow, and I’ll re-download my tracking apps.

I haven’t seen the lights, but it’s my life dream to. I haven’t been able to travel in 14 years, but I ventured out once to try and see them in Fairbanks. It was an incredibly difficult trip and I flared from it for three months after, I also got sick in other ways, took a bit of recovery. Unfortunately, the KP never rose above a 2 the whole time we were there, and it was cloudy all but one day anyways. As we approach the solar maximum in 2025, it’s more likely to see since solar activity will increase. I’m going to try again in this coming year hopefully, but with my job that’s difficult and it will ko me for a while. I haven’t planned anything yet though.

I really hope you see it wherever you’re at anon, but yeah the latest index and map reading does not look favorable. That happens though, I try not to get hopes up bc it goes up and down and is pretty unpredictable 😅 At this point, barely the northern most part of some states will be able to see it (barely) on the northern horizon if the stars align and all.
